If you're coming from Ethereum or any other smart contract platform, things can be really confusing when you first encounter Ordinals. Ordinals is a protocol that assigns and tracks the ownership of arbitrary data on Bitcoin. The data is embedded in a block (known as inscribing), and - once mined - immutable for as long as Bitcoin continues to operate. The Ordinals protocol is a software layer on top of Bitcoin that assigns a number to the smallest unit of a Bitcoin: a satoshi, and tracks the movement of that satoshi through the blockchain. The ownership of that satoshi represents the ownership of the embedded data (a.k.a. inscription) that's tied to it (click here to learn more).
If you're new to the Bitcoin ecosystem the first step is to download an Ordinals wallet like Xverse or Unisat. Next you need to fund that wallet with some Bitcoin and lastly, head over to an Ordinals marketplace like Magic Eden to purchase. It's that easy!
In the early days of Ordinals there was no infrastructure in the form of marketplaces and wallet software to trade Bitcoin Punks in a trustless manner. The market however quickly found a solution using the already existing Ethereum NFT infrastructure by essentially "wrapping" a Bitcoin wallet in an Ethereum based token. There was a company that already had this product functional which was Emblem Vault. According to our data, a little over 45% of all Bitcoin Punks have been vaulted over the course of their life, making it the most vaulted Ordinals collection to date.
Fast forward to today where the whole ecosystem has developed and matured, the trend is that Vaulted Bitcoin Punks are in decline, but still make up a remarkable 15.46% of the total collection. Click here to learn more about how to unvault your Bitcoin Punks and bring them back over to Bitcoin.

Bitcoin Punks is the first collection that inscribed 10K distinct images on the Bitcoin blockchain.
Low inscription numbers is something the community has always valued, adding an extra layer of attractiveness to the collectibles;
something unique to Bitcoin. The sub20K numbers for example have always traded for a premium and are marked in our database with this label:
All transfers of Bitcoin Punks that occurred on the blockchain are displayed here.
The Punks below can have different colored backgrounds depending on what kind of transaction occurred: there is orange for Bitcoin native transfers, cyan blue for Ethereum transfers, and Ferrari red for Vault burns, or bridging back from Ethereum to Bitcoin.

Unlike Ethereum, Bitcoin works a little different under the hood.
Where an Ethereum wallet usually consists of 1 or more Accounts, a Bitcoin wallet contains various fractions of coins (UTXO's)
that are all spendable by the wallet's private key. Bitcoin Punks - and all Ordinals Inscriptions in general - are tied to specific satoshis (the smallest indivisible parts of a bitcoin) on those UTXO's.
In the early days of Ordinals, when there were no wallets around that were aware of those inscriptions, people mistakenly spent those satoshi's as fee or sent them to exchanges, forgetting about the inscriptions that were on it.
Just like how bitcoins got lost in its early days due to a lack of awareness and general understanding of the technology, Bitcoin Punks got lost as well which is historical in a sense.
On top of that there are 21 Bitcoin Punks purposely sent to burn-addresses - addresses that are constructed without a known private key so unspendable by anyone.
You can view all lost Punks here.
